Name: the Slovak Republic (Gabriel Ovečka)
Gender: male, if you couldn't guess by his manry appearance.
Appearance:
Height» 5 ft. 10 ½ in. (179 centimeters)
Weight» 158—163 lbs. (71.6—74 kilograms)
Skin» light intermediate skin/dark-skinned European (type II, 14 on the von Luschan scale)
Hair» very dark brown
Eyes» pale green/blue-gray colour
Gabriel is a medium-set young man with a build that is strong without being overly muscular. He’s a former shepherd boy and soldier—he served Hungary and Austria, Russia—so his torso is tight, with strong shoulders and arms, legs made to run, hands calloused from both handling weapons and heavy labour. Gabriel keeps himself in shape by playing football, ice hockey, tennis—and dance. (He’ll put on loud music and dance early, early in the morning just to piss off his neighbors.) He is a dark-skinned European (not dark like those who are descended from the Berbers), of intermediate-tone skin, tanning without burning unlike his northern neighbors. His hair is a very dark brown in color, nearly black in the winter. In the spring he’ll shave his head so that he can survive the summer without overheating, but it quickly grows into a curly mess that eats everything by the fall (or, you could say, “Jewfro”). Slovakia’s eyes are a pale green/blue-gray colour framed by thick black eyelashes. His jaw is large, broad and square, nose prominent but not too large, and cheekbones wide and high. His lips are broad (laterally prolonged) and medium-fill, usually scowling or pursed together in disapproval.
Personality: Gabriel is at first glance, a mature, polite young man, never half-arsed about anything, treating everything like business to be handled. Extremely diligent, with a strong sense of duty and dedication, you can count on him for anything from just giving you a recipe to fixing a car.
Even if he doesn’t know how to do something he’ll still give his best attempt; he’s very resourceful, doing the most with his time and whatever he’s been given. His persistence is almost admirable, but sometimes it cripples him— the need to be indomitable is very stressful. Although he wants to be the best, as a realist he realizes that most times, it won’t be possible, but he wants it so badly that he strives for it and when he fails, his morale just falls and he gets angry.
Although he has endurance in a variety of areas, he is often underestimated because of his tendency towards being introverted. Gabriel uses this to his advantage.
Usually when he gets aggravated, it’s not at himself nor at others but at the situation that they’re in. Unexpected situations or settings in which he can’t do much will provoke him the most. A pessimist, he’ll quit before he even starts in order not to fail, letting the problem go unsolved. Very fatalistic as well, he’ll leave everything for the Heavens to decide, often saying things like, “if God wants it to happen, then so be it. If it’s meant to be, it will be.”
When he’s angry at someone— he won’t be blunt about it, at first. Instead of stating it outright, he’ll drop hints through snarky remarks and often he’ll try to put the other person down, polite but authoritative. When very angry, he will get physically aggressive; usually something is broken.
Fortunately when unprovoked, he’s quiet, and thoughtful. He is cautious with his words, carefully choosing what words he will say. In order to avoid seeming foolish, sometimes he won’t speak at all and just think to himself. He tends to be withdrawn, not because he doesn’t feel but because it isn’t very professional!
Gabriel is neither showy nor too dull and may seem down to Earth, but he is conceited. Along with that, he’s selfish. When he grows attached to someone or something, he will want it for himself and only himself, becoming unreasonably jealous—usually, it is something material, so he cannot give it the cold shoulder. But if you’re someone he has in his sights, he’ll most likely give you the cold shoulder.
But Gabriel is also quite ruthless. Due to many betrayals in the past, he is distrusting, especially of his Eastern neighbours and even some family members. Honesty is not his forte.
Gabriel only likes socializing with those with whom he knows well. He’ll be a little more open, joking around… usually, around the Slavs, since he has a dark sense of humour that only they can understand. He also has the patience of a saint with others, because if something needs to be done right, it can’t be done immediately.
Many of his finer qualities cannot be seen immediately, often hidden under that business only exterior of his, but once you get close to him you’ll start to notice them more and more as time progresses.
Relations with other chars:
Czech Republic — very friendly! The bond is like that of siblings, although it was not always like that. Joining together to revolt against the Austro-Hungarian Empire in WWI and winning, they formed the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918. They were to prosper and become a major power in Europe, until everything went downhill in the pre-WWII era, with Hungary and Germany pestering them for land and a change in their government. Germany invades and Czechoslovakia is separated; the war ends and they are reunited again although this time it is not as pleasant, as they are forced under communism. After communism falls, they go their separate ways and so far, it is working very well for both. Czechs poke fun at Slovaks and Slovaks poke fun right back at them.
Hungary — hate/hate relationship. After the fall of the Moravian Empire, Hungary (the Kingdom) invaded Slovak lands and for centuries, oppressed the Slovak people, trying to force Hungarian language and customs onto them (the Magyarization) among many other terrible things. Their relationship has been trending downwards ever since the rise of Czechoslovakia and dropped at least three times during the modern era: the Vienna Award, where Hungary seized Hungarian populated Slovak territory; the Warsaw Pact Invasion, in which Hungary helped invade Czechoslovakia; and in 1993, when Hungary refused to sign a treaty in which it was agreed that mutual boundaries could not be trespassed.
They are not on civil terms! In fact, Gabriel named his Czechoslovakian wolfdog after her: Erzsébet.
Russia -- a little disgruntled with him. Because, if you didn’t know, Slovakia was so close to winning the gold medal in the IIHF WC— but Russia won. Sigh.
After freeing Czechoslovakia from the Nazi regime, Russia and his fellow Soviets replaced it with a Communist regime— but Czechoslovakia did not join the USSR. Like Hungary, Russia watched ever move Czechoslovakia made, and when they saw that the Republic was moving towards a more liberal nation, Russia and Warsaw Pact friends invaded in 1968. Ever since then, Slovakia has resented Russia. A polite yet snarky resentment — not like the hatred he openly harbours for Hungary.
Germany — not the best relationship. After Germany annexes Sudetenland and Hitler promised not to invade Czechoslovakia, they did anyway and forced Slovakia to secede (threatening to let Hungary annex its land) and for most of the war, pushed it around like a little doll. News arrives that the Red Army is coming and there is a National Uprising which is crushed, which is where Gabriel’s dislike of Germany stems from. After Germany loses the war, Czechoslovakia reunites and most Germans are deported. Nowadays there is still resentment but it is faint as the Germans are not the same as those who had caused the Slovaks hardship during the war.
Liechtenstein — very bitter relationship! Liechtenstein used to be very close to Czechia and okay with Slovakia up until World War II. After WWII, relations were thrown out the door when Liechtensteiner property was seized by the newborne Czechoslovak Republic (under heavy Soviet influence). Relations have bettered recently as the Slovak Republic and Liechtenstein established diplomatic relations in 2009.

The sun shined through the gold–colored lace curtains (not exactly the best to keep out the sun, but that was the point), and Antonio’s eyes fluttered open, sweeping across the ceiling and then landing on the auburn–haired Italian who laid beside him. His heart gave a painful thump; it was hard to believe that this could be their last night together.
He couldn’t imagine life if the other left him, and now their governments were forcing them apart, all because of money and shitty luck. His lips pursed bitterly and he sighed, rubbing his temple and sitting up. The Spaniard turned to gently caress his cheek, brushing his thumb over his prominent cheekbone, down to his lips. Trying to coax him out of sleep—and because his lips were like those of angel’s, irresistible to a sinner like him—he gave him an innocent peck on the mouth.
“Lovino… Lovino, it’s time to wake up,” he murmured softly, pressing their foreheads together. He kissed his nose, tempted to forget all about the meeting at the garden, forget about his bosses and his economical crisis. He would do anything to throw his status as a Nation out the window, to have been born human, so that he could just live life without worrying about the lives of millions of people.
Antonio wished the same for Lovino… maybe, just maybe, if they had been human, they would have met, fallen in love, and been able to marry and spend the rest of their lives together no matter how short.
He sighed. Life was so cruel…
