Parts of the river that had been frozen had now began to melt under the Canadian sun allow all to see the sign that spring was very near and was approaching faster than anticipated.
Standing near the edge was Czech Republic as she surveyed the area with her very sharp, careful eyes. She wore her usual red skirt and white blouse laced with a black corset but had changed her scarf to one that was the color of the sunshine meant the radiate her current feeling of happiness being that today was a rather special day!
She loved spring...even though it was still cold in Canada she felt the difference and felt that it was a blessing as well as a curse. This meant she'd have to step up her game in her duties as a Scout...since the Zombies wouldn't be as slow and could show up out of no where at any time. Right now however Czech wasn't too worried over the Zombies...her ears had not picked up any foriegn sounds nor did she smell rotted corspe...so she felt that it was fine to stand by the riverbank for a minute or two and observe the changes.
Her eyes looked below her and saw that some snow had cleared to see that pretty little violets were starting to bloom making her beam loving flowers very much!
Her eyes now fell to the riverbank seeing the water was very clear and was creating a melodious sound as it flowed with soothed her. She casted a glance over her shoulders looking a little paranoid like a kid who was afraid of being caught with their hand in the cookie jar, then she quietly slipped off her shoes and very carefully placed her feet in the water allowing her to give out a sigh in what seemed like relief...it felt very refreshing...something that she would do a lot when she was in her homelands when she felt no one was watching.

America knew better than to leave the base without a partner alongside him. After all, since spring was now here, the zombies would also be in full bloom. The melting snow would allow them to move more freely throughout the lands, and the lack of ice would no longer deter them from coming quickly. So, obviously, he needed a partner while roaming around the river.
Luckily, he had noticed Czech coming this way earlier, and he was proven correct when he saw her standing on the bank.
He bounded up closer, grinning all the while. "Hey, Czech!" he greeted, hoping he didn't startle her too much. "it's nice out here, isn't it?"
Mentally cursing his lack of a better conversation starter (only desperate fools mentioned the weather), he came up to stand beside her, keeping his shoes out of the water. He wasn't in the mood to walk around with soaking shoes. It was still rather chilly out and that would just freeze his poor feet right up.

Czech flinched in sudden surprise as the ever so familiar voice filled her ears as she stood there ridgid only relaxing once she turned and confirmed it was who she thought. A large and very pleased grin touched her face at the sight of him.
"America!" She jumped out of the water to fling her arms around him and nearly lifted him off the ground as she always did when greeting a good friend. And America was definently one of them.
She pulled back still grinning from ear to ear but soon realized how cold her feet were as she looked down seeing they were still bare. Blushing she quickly put her shoes back on not bothered by how cold they were seeing how she had a rather callosed bare of feet.
After she was finished she gave her attention to America.
"What brings you out here America? Its not your time to patrol is it?"

Laughing at Czech's more than cheerful greeting, America drew back once the young nation let him go, straightening out his jacket. He was always happy to see Czech, due to the fact that she always seemed happy to see him. It was quite a refresher, really, to know that most of the nations hadn't yet fallen victim to that ever-looming threat of hopelessness.
"Nah, I don't have patrol to do today, actually. Some other nations took that up. I've been working on paperwork, mostly, and I've finally finished the huge stack I wanted to." It only took him a week or two. Most of the paperwork depressed him, anyway, since it dealt with his own country- construction costs, transportation ideas, politics, and the present progress of riding all the zombies from North America.
America was shocked that he hadn't yet fallen victim to the despair that hovered about them all.
"Guess I just came out here to get a breather," he explained. "The warehouse gets stuffy with all those old, boring nations hanging about."

Czech nodded at the thought of paperwork and couldn't help but feel rather proud of herself seeing how she had taken care of almost all of it...she had to admit that looking over such things were enough to stress anyone out...it was a good thing she was good as organization and managment.
A well deserved giggled escaped her lips at the mention of the old nations thinking mostly about Austria, Prussia and of course that old witch Hungary who she was rather glad was not around but secretly wished for her to come to the base unharmed.
"I can relate America! I came outside because I was a little to excited to stay inside!"
This was true...on this particular day it was difficult to get the nation to sit still much like a little kid...
"After all today is a special day for me!"

A special day? America blinked, unaware of any special day. Of course, if it was for Czech, he didn't suppose he would be aware of one. The European nations had a good amount of holidays that he didn't celebrate, since he was far above their petty parties and whatnot (though some of them were fun, and thus the reason they were introduced to his own people).
"What day is today?" he wondered out loud, looking confused.
Suddenly, he realized that it might be her birthday. Oh, god, if he forgot her birthday, he would hate himself forever and always. You didn't just forget your friend's birthday. (But it wasn't exactly forgetting, he had to remind himself, since he didn't know when it was in the first place.) He made sure everyone knew the exact date of his birthday, and he practically demanded presents and cake and parties. Granted, this would be his first birthday in the warehouse, so that was somewhat of a downer.
He quickly shifted his focus back to Czech, eagerly awaiting her answer.

Czech looked up an beamed looking like the very definition of joy. She didn't mind that he didn't know her birthday, after all they didn't know each other that long (even though she knew his very well on account that he made it a habit to remind everyone!). She just loved this day because it marked her descend into the world as a free and independent nation.
If that wasn't something to be overjoyed over then she didn't know what was!
She gave a twirl in delight making her red skirt twirl with her as she gave a laugh of joy.
"Today is my Birthday!" She stated very happily.

Ah. Yep. Just as he feared. It was his friend's birthday and he hadn't done a thing for her.
The least he could do, though, was to grin and congratulate her. "Well, happy birthday, then!" he exclaimed happily, leaning forward to hug her tightly. He let go of her, patting her shoulders. He needed to do something. He couldn't hold a birthday party this late for her, he couldn't bake a cake without the necessary materials, and he had no presents he could give to her. All in all, he figured he might make her birthday more suckish than it already was (since no one wants to spend their birthday surrounded by zombies).
"Tell you what," he said. "As my gift to you, tell me one thing you want. Like, something reasonable that I can do today." He glanced around. "Like, uh, you like fishing? Maybe I can run back to the warehouse and get some fishing supplies. Or we can watch a movie- hell, I'll even watch a boring chick-flick with you."

It felt good to be hugged by America it filled her up with so much warmth as to be expected when hugs were given on birthdays. For most anyway. When she heard America's offer she had to pause to stare. She never expected store bought gifts for her birhtday...in her nation it wasn't very customary...rather the gift was to celebrate with family...
When gifts were given however, it was customary to give something like Flowers, bakegoods, or handmade gifts. Much like many years ago Poland had given her a single red rose as to say 'I love you'. Gifts from the heart were what pleased her. So when Ameria offered to do something that she wanted it very much appreciated and made her feel so warm inside.
But of course she had trouble accepting even when it was appropiate to do some.
"Oh thank you so much America! But you don't need to!"
She said reaching over to hug him now as a way of sayin thank you.

America laughed and hugged her back again, pleased that he was at least making her smile. If he were in her spot, he'd probably be selfish and pout because no one got him any presents. Once again, he couldn't help but feel bad. Had anyone even stopped to wish her a happy birthday? How could she even still be happy without any affection from others on the most special day of the year for her?
"I know I don't need to," he responded with a snort, wondering how she could think that. "I want to, though!" He smiled. "C'mon, you sure you don't wanna watch a chick-flick? I'll get you a whole box of tissues and you can cry all you want, and maybe I can bake you a little something. At the very least, I'll make us some french toast."
If he could do that, he might be able to whip up a candle somewhere and make it even more festive. Czech needed a festive birthday. Everyone needed a festive birthday.

Czech couldn't help but laugh at America...she just couldn't help it...his persistance was simply adorable! She espcially felt touched that he was trying to make her day special...not that she needed any special reconition! But she he had been one of the only ones to wish her a happy brithday other than her brother Slovakia that is who never forgotten her special day...being that it was his birthday as well making it not that difficult.
She giggled not really liking chick-flicks to be honest...but the jesture was sweet enough.
"Thanks but no thanks America! THey're a little too...depressing for me."
Being European she loved her films dark and had the liberty of making quite a few groundbreakers. She clinged to his arm and nuzzled it affectionantly.
"Okay America I'll take you up on the French Toast!"
A mischevious smile touched her... "And instead of a chick-flick we can maybe watch a...horror film...?"

America grinned when she finally decided to take up his offer on the french toast. Obviously, he could do without the chick-flick, so maybe they would be able to just sit at a table to talk and eat whatever he could concoct (french toast, mostly, but he might add something else). He was already planning to scrounge around for some leftover syrup that Canada might have left over, and they might have some fresh fruit left somewhere or another.
However, in the midst of all his planning, one thing Czech said stuck out to him. A horror film. With a start, he glanced down at her, mouth suddenly dried. He said that he was going to do whatever it was that Czech wanted to do, but would he actually be able to handle a horror film?
Swallowing nervously, he answered, "Well, um...if you wanna stick one in while I make the french toast, that'd be awesome." Yes, that way he could take longer on the french toast and make it so he didn't have to watch as much of the movie. Besides, the ending was always when it was being wrapped up, so if he could time everything correctly, he could arrive at the ending (though he doubted cooking french toast would take over an hour).
The plan was still genius.

His remark was simply priceless...so much so that she could not help but laugh holding her stomach in place.
"I was only kidding America!" She said in between laughs not having laughed this hard in a while...she was really just being a little mean spirited much like a little kid just to play with him...and it did work to her advantage. She was laughing after all!
When she had finished she flashed him one of her brightest smiles as to say 'I'm sorry it was a bad joke'.
"I'll think about it later America...right now I am actually eager to taste your cooking!"
She had never really tried any of America's food. Though they were mostly borrowed from other nations as were most recipes for each nation each had a special way of preparing it and thus all had a different taste.

Letting out a sigh of relief when Czech explained how she had just been joking (and a blush of embarrassment- he had gotten himself pretty nicely worked up, and she had laughed at him, but that was to be expected so he wasn't too concerned with it), America shrugged his shoulders. "Didn't know you were kidding," he mumbled in reply, feeling the slightest bit silly.
Luckily, she still seemed happy, so he wasn't going to concern himself with getting his pride back.
He did feel better when she mentioned his cooking. Holding himself taller, he nodded enthusiastically. "And you should be eager! My cooking is awesome! I mean, everyone says it isn't, but that's only 'cause they can't cook as good as I can. I mean, I'm better with grilling up some meat and whatever, but I'm pretty sure I can do breakfast items just as well!"
At the very least, he didn't burn the food like England did.

As they headed off towards the base Czech couldn't help but wonder what his cooking did taste like. She remembered when talking to England once that he began to ramble on about America's cooking and how terrible it was...then of course France had to add in the fact that England's cooking wasn't any better which resulted in another fight between them. She had to wonder...he was raised by England and did take a lot of influence from his old mentor...could he of also gained England's...Cooking abilities. If so then she didn't know if she'd be able to handle it...I mean it was hard enough to even smell England's food half the time but always never let on of course.
Still she did not have any right to judge it before even tasting it...if she had that kind of attitude then she probably never would have experienced some of the greatest foods such as Apple Strudle for an example. So like a big girl she'd try it...if she liked it...then that was good. If not then she'd stomach through it like the polite young lady she was.
As soon as they reached the kitchen Czech set to work. It was a known fact that Czech loved cooking being a rather excellent chef herself but more so a baker seeing how she had a very large sweet tooth. She grabbed the ingredients that were needed...egg, flour, a little dash of butter and so forth. Really she was doing this just out of habit seeing how whenever she did enter a kitchen it was to cook...and only cook.
